Shopping for swimsuits was not a pleasant experience until I spent some time in Costa Rica. People who live there are not at all afraid to show off some skin. It’s kind of contagious. I made the decision back then to enjoy my able body that could run on the beach, swim in the water, and surf on the waves instead of spending time worrying about hiding things. It was a big shift of focus, and I felt free. Even when I happened to cross paths with Gisele in her swimsuit (funny story!), I held my course mentally.

Just in case you have to shop for one on an “off day”, here are some helpful tips:
1. A versatile one piece swimsuit with modern details in a flattering silhouette = MAJOR style points!
A classic one piece is essential for glamorous occasions that may occur spontaneously. This suit does everything right. Throw a black dress or a maxi skirt over the top and you are set to go from pool to dinner.
2. There is a flattering swimsuit out there for every body type. The trick is to create visual balance.
If you’ve got narrow shoulders compared to the width of your hips, a narrow waist and a smaller bust, that means you have a “triangle” or a “pear” shape. Wear a print or fuller coverage top to balance out the width of your hips.
This printed bikini top has horizontal stripes which will create the illusion of a fuller cup size. Pair this with a solid black bikini bottom.
3. Contrary to popular belief, less <coverage> is more in the swimsuit department.
If you’ve got a triangle shape, be cautious of buying bikini bottoms that are too big in size or silhouette.
This piece will create an illusion of a fuller bust while accentuating your slim waist. Now you’ve got the ever sexy hourglass figure!
4. While many of us choose to be more modest, especially as we get older, now is the time to accentuate our cleavage!
If you’ve got broad shoulders, a fuller bust and tummy, plus narrow hips, you have an “inverted triangle” or an “apple” shape.
Here’s a great example from Popina that will minimize your tummy, show off your shoulders and balance your hips with that straight line across the bottom. Attention will be drawn up towards your face and down towards your svelte legs.
If you’ve got an inverted triangle shape, be cautious of buying teensy bikini bottoms that will make you look top heavy.
Wear your print on the bottom. A high-waisted brief makes your bum appear fuller and conveniently holds your tummy in. Pair this with a supportive solid colored top.
5. Once you’ve got your basic suit taken care of, get adventurous with your second suit!
Try an unexpected print, asymmetrical style or bold color to spice things up! After a few days in the sun, you’ll be ready to rock it.
Wardrobe Care Tip: Hand washing and air drying will add years to the life of your swimsuit.
Have fun in the sun!
