Known for their protection against the elements, hats can be at the very least, a practical necessity. Worn originally for religious or ceremonial reasons, safety purposes or warmth, welcome a new hat in town: The Fashion Accessory.
Alright, so the Fashion Hat is not so new in town. Dating back to the 18th century, the term “Milliner” was coined in the city of Milan when women of the trade began not only creating hats and bonnets, but also selecting lace, and trimmings to complete their looks. Fast forward to the 1980’s and more flamboyant designs, including the Turban, were hitting the runways. Which brings us to the present day where hats now could often be described as wearable sculptures. With so many different materials, shapes and sizes to describe each style and fit, a signature head covering is a very complex thing. I recently took a client to my favorite hat shop here in Portland, Pinkham Millinery, where owner and expert, Dayna Pinkham set her up with a custom hat that is nothing short of fabulous. As you know, finding your signature style includes sourcing your signature accessories. If you’re looking to invest in this timeless trend, here’s some inspiration!
