There is a strange and cool, resurfacing trend that leaves many of us puzzled. Like an unexpected time warp, Culottes have found themselves back on the high fashion runways of 2014. Seemingly gone forever, the style you may remember your Mother (or even yourself sporting) made its way to the vaults of fashion soon after the 1970’s. My Mom worked in fashion. For the first day of school in my new 5th grade class in Sag Harbor, NY, she dressed me in a bright red t-shirt and black & white check culottes – I was mortified as the new girl, but she seemed pleased with her outfit choice and she was always ahead of her time!
Not the first surprising comeback we’ve seen recently (I’m talking about you, Harem Pants), thankfully the latest Culotte incarnations come in an exciting and versatile array of casual, work-appropriate, and super fashion forward. Still unsure of what exactly a Culotte is? Just think any garment that hangs like a skirt, but is actually short pants. They are a tricky garment to incorporate, so I’ve put together a visual lesson. Enjoy!

A professional look using Culottes! The material and fit could easily sub in for a suit pant. The shorter jacket helps define her waist, and the pointed-toe heels elongate her legs balancing out the roomier silhouette.

We’re all well acquainted with the Minimal trend by now, and this is a stunning adaptation. The fit on these is more delicate and flow-y, taking on a drop-waist affect with the pleats beginning at her thigh. Great for women looking to create fullness at the hip.

Make a statement while not sacrificing comfort! The white polka dot pattern helps equalize the bright pink hue and full shape below. The let down buttons in her top create a V that carries your eye down, matching the split of the Culottes, for a long-line effect.

This look is great for a backyard party or weekend brunch. The sandals take it down a notch so be sure to accessorize. The clean lines in her top and perfectly slicked hair, help to avoid looking sloppy. If you’re tall, try this.

This stunning shorter version is great for ladies needing to add a bit of volume at the hip. The darker more saturated blues and long sleeve make it a perfect look for transitioning into Fall. Extra points for texture and lace-up heels!

This last one just might be my favorite. A most perfect summer look, show a little skin and that hard earned body with a Crop Top and Culottes.
Which look would you rock? Enjoy the weekend’s beautiful weather. Here’s to hoping for another epic sunset to pair with tonight’s Full Moon!
