Fashion magazine spreads can seem bewildering. The theatrical pairings, the luxurious prices, the shape of models, the things we would never wear IRL. But fashion can be a platform for visual ideas of expression, intellectualism, status, desire, and, of course, sales. From a creative perspective, they can offer inspirational and inventive fuel for mixing colors, experimenting with shapes, and daydreaming about how clothing and styling invite us to get playful with auxiliary versions of ourselves.
Many view fashion as frivolous, however, style is truly personal. If we are striving to embrace the playful, the relevant, the creative in our lives, we can let fashion trends inform the outfits we make as we shop our own closets!
Here are some trend notes to reference this Fall:
Monochromatic Pairings Are Always Elegant

Even in bright colors, a monochromatic look always seems pulled-together, relevant and thoughtful. This is especially true with structured pieces like trousers & jackets. Blend different textures in one hue from head to toe for an interesting and elongating effect.
For an elegant of-the-moment, timeless look, add this coat to a head-to-toe monochromatic camel-colored outfit.
Color Stories Emerge

Cobalt blue is an on-trend color this season, as are red and fuschia, especially together. Neon is a prominent feature (think shoes) as is marigold. Dream pairing: cobalt, camel, red & fuchsia together. Possibly with a neon pump! What does this mean for you? Use this note as an opportunity to invest in a piece in these colors and then have fun pushing yourself to incorporate more vibrant color in your wardrobe in general!
For a fun splash of neon, try this practical pump from DOPP.
Shapes Dominate

The knee-high boot is getting a lot of press, as are boxy overcoats & capes, pleated trousers (for men and women), and the poufy, power shoulder. Exaggerated shapes can be fun and can often flatter. Just make sure if there’s a shape that accentuates, it’s in an area you’d like to broaden. There are tricks to working with shape, and times to break the rules, but in general, we follow a rule of balance.
For an approachable exaggerated shape, see this pouf-shouldered blouse from A.L.C.
Fabrics Change

This season it is feathers. Don’t ask us why. But how fun?! With the current environmental awareness, most of these will be faux. But if you see something you love with a bit of feather-flair, you can go for it with unabashed knowing that it’s not just you who loves this current trend!
For a little fun with feathers, add this clutch to an evening outfit.
Sparkle Sparkle Everywhere

Sequins need not be reserved for holiday parties, wear them anywhere! For a minimalist, a little goes a long way so think statement sneakers. For a maximalist, now is your time to invest in a full on sparkling uniform!
To try your hand at sparkle, add this easy to style sequin skirt, or these statement sneakers.
SOME ADDITIONAL STYLE NOTES
The vibe of a luxury brand can be approximated.
We can take inspiration from the big names in fashion to seek out similar pieces within our price range and still feel like we are keeping our wardrobe current.
Some items are worth splurging on, but trendy items are usually not.
As much fun as a new designer “It” thing might be, unless your budget easily accommodates this piece, go for the classic items when spending big so that you get bang for your buck AND great cost per wear.
Not every trend/shape/color is for everyone.
This season’s color palette is workable for most skin tones, but, for example, neon green might not be your best new sweater color. Shapes must be applied with attention to balance. And some trends may not suit one’s personality/age/style/wardrobe needs. It’s ok. Better to pick things that allow you to look your best self and to feel authentic than to feel pressure to conform to a trend.
